Attorney General-Elect Derek Brown
Derek E. Brown was elected Utah Attorney General on November 5th, 2024 and will become Utah’s 22nd Attorney General on January 6, 2024.
Derek graduated from Brigham Young University and Pepperdine Law School, where he served as Editor of the Law Review. He then began his career working in Washington, D.C., practicing with the international law firm Mayer Brown. After clerking for the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, Derek then practiced constitutional and appellate law with the international law firm Sidley & Austin. He then served as Chief Counsel to Senator Robert F. Bennett (R-UT) in Washington, D.C. After moving with his family back to his home state of Utah, Derek spent several years as counsel to Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT) and later Deputy Chief of Staff/State Director to Senator Mike Lee.
In 2010, Derek was elected to the Utah House of Representatives, where he served as Vice-Chair of the Rules Committee, as well as on the House Business and Labor Committee, House Judiciary Committee, House Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Committee, and Higher Education Appropriations Subcommittee. He also served as Co-Chair of the Occupational and Professional Licensure Review Committee.
As Attorney General, Derek will prioritize pushing back against federal overreach in public land policy, immigration, and energy resources. He will work tirelessly to lead the Office in new ways to reach its mission while highlighting the outstanding work of the attorneys and staff who work there. Most importantly, Derek will support and defend the Constitution and the laws of the great State of Utah.
